Las peleas de toros en Arequipa representan una práctica cultural que lleva más de 200 años de historia, donde se realiza un duelo formal entre dos toros de lidia en un espacio cerrado. A diferencia de la tauromaquia española, aquí se enfrentan toros entre sí hasta que uno de ellos se retira o cede, sin participación humana durante el combate y sin sacrificio del animal.

Origen y Características: Surgieron de manera natural en el siglo XIX entre los campesinos y agricultores de la zona rural arequipeña que utilizaban estos toros para trabajar la tierra en yuntas.

El Encuentro: Los toros se enfrentan empujándose; el que se rinde, se vuelve o escapa es declarado el derrotado. Los jueces se aseguran de que los animales no sufran maltrato y que el enfrentamiento sea motivado por su instinto.

Calendario de Eventos: Esta práctica está organizada por asociaciones de criadores locales y se lleva a cabo durante todo el año en varias localidades tradicionales. Algunas de las fechas más importantes son:

-24 de Junio: Celebración del aniversario del distrito de Characato.

-Agosto: Festividades por el aniversario de Arequipa (como el famoso torneo «Ciudad de Arequipa»), además de días especiales en Paucarpata y Chiguata.

-Octubre y Enero: Eventos significativos por aniversarios distritales (como los que se realizan en Achoma o la Bajada de Reyes en Tiabaya).

Bullfighting in Arequipa is a cultural practice with a history spanning over 200 years, featuring a formal duel between two fighting bulls within an enclosed space. Unlike Spanish-style bullfighting, here the bulls face off against each other until one retreats or yields; there is no human intervention during the contest, and the animal is not killed.

Origins and Characteristics : The practice emerged naturally in the 19th century among the rural farmers of Arequipa, who used these bulls in teams (yokes) to work the land.

The Match: The bulls face each other by pushing; the one that surrenders, turns away, or flees is declared the loser. Judges ensure the animals are not mistreated and that the confrontation is driven by natural instinct.

Event Calendar: Organized by local breeders’ associations, these events take place throughout the year in various traditional locations. Some of the most important dates include:

-24th June: Celebration of the Characato district anniversary.

-August: Festivities marking Arequipa’s anniversary (such as the famous «Ciudad de Arequipa» tournament), as well as special events in Paucarpata and Chiguata..

– October and January: Significant events for district anniversaries (such as those held in Achoma or the *Bajada de Reyes* in Tiabaya).
